Why use native plants?Emily Green's recent opinion piece for the LA Times encourages Southern Californians to embrace native plants in order to save one of California's most important resource: water. Regarding Los Angeles' obsession with green lawns, Green writes, "Tan is good; yellow is good; orange, maroon, gray, aquamarine are all good too, for those are the colors of the buckwheats, sages, manzanitas and deer and canyon grasses of our native chaparral. Those are the colors of our native flora as its spring greens give way to the infinitely more subtle plant palette of California in summertime."
