San Diego’s Water Use is Down!Good news to all of us that live in San Diego, our total water usage has dipped from 2007 to 2009. The San Diego County Water Authority has released data on the total water use in 2007, 2009 and the first quarter of 2010. San Diego used 12.7% less water in 2009 than it had in 2007. While it is a good thing that we are using less water, it is still imperative to continue to conserve as much as possible. One way the Water Authority is using to decrease our need of water is by recycling it. By recycling, the Water Authority estimates they will be able to reuse about 53,000 acre feet of water by 2020. (Keep in mind, an acre foot is enough to cover one acre with one foot of water. It is approximately 325,851.4 gallons.)
According to the website, “Agencies in San Diego County use recycled water to fill lakes, ponds, and ornamental fountains; to irrigate parks, campgrounds, golf courses, freeway medians, community greenbelts, school athletic fields, food crops, and nursery stock; and to control dust at construction sites.” For more information on recycling click here.
