“Glass not Grass”

Cathedral City, in the Coachella Valley, is doing something rather interesting to help conserve water.  They are converting the area around their sidewalks and street medians from grass to glass.  The glass in question is 100% recycled and comes in an assortment of colors and sizes.  Not only does the glass help reduce water use, it also punctuates the desert landscape with vibrant colors that shimmer in the sunlight.  The city estimates converting only one median from grass to glass saves $3,120 of maintenance costs and 43,800 gallons of water per year.

Cathedral City, however, isn’t stopping there.  They have successfully surpassed their 50% waste diversion goal every year since 2000 and installed new park irrigation systems saving 14 million gallons of water in two parks alone!  That is almost the same amount that 100 households use in an entire year!
